'Cuse hosts Army on Sunday in its first ranked test of the season
'Cuse hosts Army West Point on Sunday in the Dome. Here are five things to know:
1. It'll be the first top-10 battle of the year.
No. 5 Syracuse will host No. 7 Army on Sunday in what will be the first ranked foe the Orange will face this season.
If the rankings were to hold as they are today, Syracuse will square off with five other teams in the top-10 in 2020 as the four other ACC squads also rank in the top-10 this week with 'Cuse and Army. SU will also square off with Cornell and Johns Hopkins who are in the poll. With 10 regular season games left on the docket, just three remaining opponents are unranked.
2. Controlling the X.
Thus far, Syracuse has soundly beaten its opposition on faceoffs. Jakob Phaup, Danny Varello, Nate Garlow and stellar wing play have the Orange leading the nation in faceoff win percentage heading into the third weekend of the season.
Army has been middle of the pack nationally in the stat category (28th) and has been solid in their victories (41-of-71 combined). However, the Cadets were just 11-of-28 in their loss to Marist, helping the Red Foxes control possessions of an Army squad that entered that game ranked in the top-10 nationally in scoring.
3. Always a challenge.
The last four games between Syracuse and Army have been decided by a total of five goals. The Orange's 10-8 victory was the largest margin of victory over Army since 2015, when Syracuse won by three.
The Orange have won the last two games against Army, including an 11-10 triple overtime win in 2018. Syracuse has won 21 out of the last 24 matchups, but the Black Knights have a 40-26 edge in the all-time series.
Â
4. Tough on the Ride
The Orange attack line has been wreaking havoc this season on the ride. Griffin Cook (four) ranks 22nd in the nation in caused turnovers per game and Stephen Rehfuss is right behind with three caused turnovers on the year.
Since caused turnovers came an officially kept statistic by the NCAA in 2010, the Orange single-season record for caused turnovers by an attackman is nine by Cody Jamieson in 2010. Only three 'Cuse attackmen have caused more than six turnovers in a single season in total. Chris Daniello (8) in 2010 and Dylan Donahue (7) in 2015 are the others with Jamieson.
