
Porter, Cooper Named Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Drake Porter (men's lacrosse) and Gabrielle Cooper (women's basketball) are the Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 24.

Porter is a senior from Aurora, Ontario who is majoring in advertising in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He's also pursuing a minor in communications and rhetorical studies. Porter was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and the ACC Honor Roll in 2019, and he's earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll four times. Porter and his teammates worked with Team IMPACT to welcome five-year-old Gaven Bort and his family to the men's lacrosse family in October 2019.

On the field, Porter is Syracuse's top netminder. His junior season he earned All-ACC Team honors after recording an ACC-best 12.64 save per game, which ranked 15th nationally. Going into the 2020 season, Porter was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-America team as well as the preseason All-ACC team and played for Team Canada in the 2019 US Lacrosse Fall Classic. Porter has stopped 62 percent of the shots he's faced this year which ranks ninth nationally. He made a career-high 18 saves—the most by a Syracuse goaltender since 2010—in a 9-7 comeback win over Army last Sunday. His performance earned him ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Porter and the No. 3 men's lacrosse team host Hobart for the 106th meeting between the two programs Friday at 7 p.m. (ACC Network). The Kraus-Simmons Trophy is on the line, and Syracuse is in pursuit of its 800th victory with a Simmons family member on staff.

Cooper is a senior from Lansing, Ill. who is a psychology and African American studies double major in the College of Arts and Sciences. She's twice earned spots on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and is a two-time ACC All-Academic Team member.

Cooper has recorded 1,072 points in 123 career games. She was the 29th Orange player to hit the 1,000-point milestone, and 13th in the Quentin Hillsman era, during Syracuse's game against Georgia Tech on Jan. 16. The senior guard has 42 steals on the year which ranks 11th in the conference. She's also averaging 8.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and has recorded two double-doubles this year. Cooper's 260 career three-pointers rank second in program history, her 81 made treys in 2016-17 are tied for ninth-most in a single season, and she's tied the program record for single-game threes (eight) three times.
The Orange travel to No. 10 NC State on Thursday, Feb. 27 for their final road game of the regular season. 'Cuse then returns home Sunday to face Boston College on Senior Day/Alumni Weekend at 4 p.m. (Regional Sports Network, YES Network in Syracuse)
