
Four Orange Earn Preseason All-ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior attacker Emily Hawryschuk leads a group of four Syracuse players selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team in a vote by the league's head coaches. In addition, the Orange were picked to finish second in the league.

Hawryschuk is joined on the Preseason All-ACC team by redshirt junior defender Kerry Defliese, sophomore defender Sarah Cooper and sophomore attacker Megan Carney. Syracuse's four selections tied for the most for any school in the league.

Hawryschuk earned IWLCA All-American and All-ACC First Team honors in 2019 after she scored 75 goals, which ranked ninth in the nation. She finished the year with 94 points and 19 assists. Hawryschuk enters her senior season ranked seventh on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list with 166.

Defliese started all 21 games on defense last season and recorded career highs in ground balls (31) and caused turnovers (27). She ranked sixth in the ACC in caused turnovers per game (1.38) and was selected to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team as well as the All-ACC Second Team.

Cooper also started all 21 games on Syracuse's defense last season. The 2019 ACC Rookie of the Year led the Orange in caused turnovers (33) and ranked second in ground balls (36). Cooper was voted to the All-ACC Second Team and was the only freshman on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List.

Carney ranked second on the team in assists (24) and third in goals (32) and points (56) in her rookie campaign. She posted five points in each of Syracuse's NCAA Tournament games and recorded a season-high nine points (4g, 5a) in the Orange's win against Virginia Tech. Carney helped the U.S. win gold at the World Lacrosse Women's U19 Championship last summer.

Defending ACC Tournament champion North Carolina was picked to win the regular-season title. The Tar Heels earned 62 points, followed by the Orange with 52 points. Notre Dame was picked third with 45 points, narrowly edging out Boston College, which tallied 43 points. Virginia (35 pts.), Virginia Tech (22 pts.), Duke (20 pts.) and Louisville (9 pts.) round out the preseason poll.

No. 4/4 Syracuse opens the 2020 season on Friday, Feb. 7 against Canisius at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Admission and parking are free.
