Pride in the Ride

Syracuse attack unit has caused 11 turnovers leading directly to seven goals thus far
Scoring at a clip of 17 points per game, there are plenty of strengths to point out on Syracuse's offense
Griffin Cook has the most caused turnovers in the nation this season by an attackman at 1.75 per game. Only two attackmen in program history have caused more turnovers in a single season than Cook has through four games (7). Only Cody Jamieson (9, 2010) and Chris Daniello (8, 2010) have more among attackmen since caused turnovers became an official NCAA statistic in 2010.
"A lot of it starts with Griffin Cook, that's the first thing I noticed about him when he was a freshman last year," Stephen Rehfuss said. "This year he talks about it all the time. More than maybe points or goals, he talks about how he wants to cause a couple turnovers per game. I think he takes a lot of pride in that. Chase does too. I think the last couple of years our group hasn't been as great on the ride and we've been improving on that and Cook is definitely helping out a lot with that."
Cook, Rehfuss and Chase Scanlan – the starting Orange attack – have combined for 11 caused turnovers on the season. Rehfuss has four caused turnovers of his own behind Cook and leads all non-faceoff specialists in ground balls this season with 15.
Those 11 caused turnovers have led directly to seven 'Cuse goals on the ensuing possession.
"They've created a few goals off the ride this year," said head coach John Desko. "If you can create one or two goals off the ride; that can be the difference in a game."
Cook embraces the ride and uses it as an opportunity to get back at the people who spend all game trying to take the ball away from him.
"I think the ride is a really important part of the game," Cook said when asked about the attack unit's success on the ride thus far. "If we didn't score on offense, it gives us an opportunity to get the ball back and whack those defenders who've been slashing us all game. I think that it just goes to show that we're a group that loves to hustle and we're going to ride our butts off and do whatever we can to help the team get the win."
While the first midfield unit has deservedly turned heads so far this season, the attack line has combined for 38 points this season already. Rehfuss is closing in on the top-20 all-time in Syracuse history in assists, and Scanlan leads the Orange with 13 goals and 17 points.
Syracuse and Johns Hopkins face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday in a game set to be broadcast on ESPN3.
