Syracuse’s Season Ends with Loss to Robert Morris

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Syracuse ice hockey's run in the 2020 College Hockey America (CHA) tournament came to a close Friday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to two-seed Robert Morris at the LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y. Lindsay Eastwood and Mae Batherson put Syracuse two goals ahead early on, but a second period rally led to five-unanswered RMU goals. Eastwood's goal was her 28th point of the season and tied the Syracuse record for points in a single season by a defender. 'Cuse ends the year 14-20-2 (11-7-2 CHA) with a program-best 105 goals and 275 points.
How it happened:
Robert Morris had the first quality scoring opportunity of the game two minutes in when Courtney Kollman came skating down the left side and beat Allison Small high blocker side, but the lamp didn't light as the shot pinged off the crossbar. Small was checked early and often but made save after save to keep things even. Eastwood had a quality chance midway through the period that appeared to be a sure-fire goal, but Raygan Kirk swallowed the chance. Eastwood would go on to put the Orange ahead in the final minute thanks to a huge second effort after Kirk gave up a rebound from Savannah Rennie. Eastwood's eighth of the year put 'Cuse ahead 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The middle period was nothing short of exciting. Batherson started things off, registering her sixth goal of the year a minute in to put 'Cuse ahead 2-0. RMU then rallied in full, with Jaycee Gebhard, Anjelica Diffendal and Emily Curlett all lighting the lamp to put the Colonials ahead by a goal. Kelli Rowswell appeared to answer immediately after Curlett's goal, but it was called off for goaltender interference and Syracuse entered the second intermission down 3-2.
The Colonials put the final nails in the coffin early into the third period. Natalie Marcuzzi stuffed one past Small four minutes in, and her effort was followed by Gebhard slapping in her second of the night two minutes later. After Eastwood was called for a slashing penalty while fighting off a breakaway, she popped out the box and set up a wide open Batherson between the circles. Batherson leaned into her shot, but Kirk grabbed it to keep the score 5-2 RMU. Syracuse continued to try and make something happen but they couldn't score and fell to the Colonials.
