Rehfuss ties a career-high with seven assists
A dominant performance from start to finish moved the No. 1 Syracuse men's lacrosse team to 5-0 after a 15-9 victory over Johns Hopkins.
Stephen Rehfuss tied a career high with seven assists, while Chase Scanlan (5-1), Jamie Trimboli (4-1), Tucker Dordevic (3-0), Brendan Curry (2-0) and David Lipka (1-0) also contributed in the scoring. Drake Porter was solid in net again, with 16 saves to stymie the Blue Jays scoring chances.
"A very good win for us today, I think anytime you come to Homewood and leave with a win, that's a good thing," said Head Coach John Desko. "I think our offense got off to a very good start and the offense got going with 10 goals in the first half and I think the defense was fairly solid all day long."
The Orange jumped all over Hopkins early on, with seven goals in the first quarter. Scanlan scored first, before Hopkins answered with a Garrett Degnon goal. After that, a six-goal run broke the game open for the rest of the period. Trimboli (twice), Scanlan, Dordevic (twice) and Lipka all found the back of the cage in the first. Rehfuss had four assists in the first 14 minutes of action as well.
The run was aided by 'Cuse winning the majority of faceoffs on the day. SU won 18-of-28 restarts, with Danny Varello (9-of-13) and Jakob Phaup (9-of-15) both having strong days.
Syracuse kept it rolling in the second, with Curry, the Baltimore native, scoring his first of the day on a feed from Rehfuss. Hopkins' Owen McManus and Trimboli traded goals in the midway part of the frame, but Scanlan notched another goal with two minutes before halftime to extend the Orange lead to 10-4 heading into the locker room.
Curry and Trimboli opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals to make it an eight-goal Syracuse lead, before a three-goal Hopkins run pulled the Blue Jays within five with 13 minutes to go. It was the first time since the second quarter Hop had been within a fist full of goals. Scanlan ended that in a hurry, scoring two more to effectively put things out of reach.
Syracuse controlled every facet, going 22-of-24 on clears, winning the ground ball battle 34-26 and converting on 3-of-5 extra-man opportunities, while holding the Blue Jays to 1-of-6 on man-ups.
The Orange return to action at Rutgers next Saturday at 1 p.m.
