Syracuse hosted an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in program history on May 11, 2008 when Towson came to the Carrier Dome for a first-round contest. It was a memorable day for the Orange and junior Katie Rowan, who set NCAA Tournament and single-game school records for points (13) and assists (8) in Syracuse's 21-9 victory.
The 'Cuse entered the Tournament as the No. 5 seed with a 16-2 record. The Orange had won their last 10 games, including a pair at the BIG EAST Tournament to claim their second consecutive conference title.
Rowan's eight assists and 13 points broke Maryland's Jen Adams' NCAA Championship records of seven assists and 11 points set against Monmouth in the first round of the 2001 tournament. In addition, Rowan ended the game with five goals to take sole possession of first place on Syracuse's all-time goals-scored list. She finished her career with 396 points, which rank first on Syracuse's career leader list and sixth in NCAA Divison I history. Rowan is also the Orange's all-time leader in assists (164) and is third in goals (232).
The first eight minutes of the game featured back-and-forth action as both teams found the back of the net twice. Christina Dove gave the Orange the early lead with a goal 3:03 into the contest. Towson responded with 24:10 remaining before Awehiyo Thomas scored off Rowan's first assist of the game to give SU the lead with 23:21 left on the clock. The Tigers again answered 69 seconds later to tie the score. It remained that way until Dove fed Rowan for her first goal of the day with 18:22 on the clock. That goal ignited a 7-0 scoring run for SU that gave the Orange a 9-2 lead with 9:11 remaining. After a pair of Towson goals, Rowan converted two straight free-position opportunities as Syracuse built a 13-5 halftime lead.
The Orange offensive continued to produce in the second half as Thomas, Dove and Halley Quillinan recorded goals in the first eight minutes. After Towson tallied twice, the Orange responded with four straight of their own on their way to recording the 12-goal victory.
Quillinan finished with four goals, while Kristin Brady had a hat trick for the Orange. Syracuse freshman netminder Liz Hogan made her first career start in the post-season and recorded 11 saves. The Orange defense forced 18 turnovers, while Syracuse picked up 14 ground balls to six for the Tigers.
The win was the first step in Syracuse's run to its first appearance in the national semifinals
