Orange Signee Named Gatorade Player of the Year
6/29/2020 1:52:00 PM | Track and Field
Syracuse track and field incoming freshman Brevin Sims has been named Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Tennessee.
The Gatorade Player of the Year honors the top high school athlete in each state in their respective sport. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Sims as Tennessee's best high school boys track & field athlete. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced in July.
Sims heads to 'Cuse holding the state record in the 60-meter hurdles and posted the nation's top mark among indoor competitors in 2020 with a time of 7.76 seconds. While just a high school senior, that time would have put Sims in the top-20 nationally of college competitors this year.
Sims is a nine-time state champion who earned All-America honors at the 2019 New Balance Nationals with a state-record time of 13.70 in the 110-meter hurdles, which was good for fourth nationally. He was also runner-up in the event at the 2019 AAU Junior Olympics.
