SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Emma Carlisle Reske joins the Syracuse men's rowing program as an assistant coach after spending the previous year as an assistant coach with the Princeton men's lightweight crew. Carlisle Reske replaces Stephen Hoskins '15 who spent the last two seasons coaching at his alma mater.
Â
"I am tremendously excited to have the opportunity to join the hardworking and talented staff here at Syracuse," Carlisle Reske said. "I am grateful to Coach Reischman for allowing me the chance to work with such an accomplished and competitive group of athletes. I look forward to contributing to many more successful seasons!"
Â
"First off, I want to thank Stephen Hoskins for his contributions to our program over the past two years," Reischman said. "I enjoyed having him on our staff and our athletes really benefited from his coaching. When we started our search, this position was the only men's D1 assistant job open in the country. We had a really strong candidate field and I want to thank everyone who applied. It was quite enjoyable to talk with so many talented candidates and discuss the great things we have going on here at Syracuse."
Â
Carlisle Reske most recently directed the walk-on rowing team at Princeton and specified with the fourth varsity crew last spring. Prior to her stop at Princeton, she was on staff at the University of Massachusetts in various assistant coach roles beginning as part-time assistant in 2017 and leading the varsity fours as a full-time assistant by the time of her departure in August 2019.
Â
"What stands out about Emma is that she is not only a student of the sport but also a student of coaching," Reischman added. "That is a subtle distinction but an important one when you invest in the development of a young coach. She has spent a lot of time studying the various elements of our sport and that, combined with her various coaching experiences, will add tremendous value to our program. Our student-athletes will benefit greatly from her passion and expertise. Coach Elefant and I are very excited to have her join our staff."
Â
In addition to her role at Princeton, she has directed the masters rowing program at the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association since 2019 where her responsibilities included coaching various levels of experienced boats, organizing daily lineups, creating weekly coaching schedules and annual training plans.
Â
In August 2018 she served as a program coach at the Craftsbury Outdoors Center in Craftsbury, Vt. Carlisle Reske got her first taste of coaching at the collegiate level when she joined the UMass program as a volunteer assistant from late 2016 until June 2017. Prior to making the transition from volunteer to full-time assistant at UMass she was also a program coach at Northampton Community Rowing. Carlisle Reske directed youth and adult rowers plus regattas, created training plans and ran practices.
Â
She first tested the coaching waters in 2011 when she spent that summer and the following two at Dee Campbell Rowing Center in Alexandria, Va. She led the advanced sculling program and developed novice, intermediate, varsity and master's rowers. She also served a brief stint at Old Dominion Boat Club in 2014.
As a four-year letterwinner at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., Carlisle Reske was a two-time captain and All-American. She was an ECAC All-Star and a NEWMAC All-Conference selection in 2015. As a four-time NEWMAC Scholar-Athlete, she also was a recipient of the Smith College Golden Oar Award in 2015.
Â
A US Rowing Level II certified coach, Carlisle Reske is a two-time graduate of Smith. In 2015 she completed a bachelor of arts in elementary education and liberal studies. She went on to add a master's degree in 2018 with a concentration in exercise science and coaching.
