SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Season-high 23-point performances from Buddy Boeheim and Joseph Girard III powered Syracuse (8-4, 2-3 ACC) past Miami (6-7, 2-6 ACC) in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night, 83-57.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
After a slow start from the field in the game's first six minutes put Syracuse in an early 11-2 hole, the Orange offense overwhelmed the Hurricanes over the remainder of the half, outscoring the visitors 34-11 to take a 14-point lead at the intermission.
At the end of the night, Quincy Guerrier joined Boeheim and Girard III in double figures with 18 points and led Syracuse on the boards with eight rebounds. SU received production off the bench from Kadary Richmond (seven points, eight assists) and Jesse Edwards (seven points, six rebounds) that aided the Orange to victory.
FROM COACH BOEHEIM
"With Marek (Dolezaj) in foul trouble, Jesse (Edwards) was monstrous for us" said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "He did a great job in the middle. He still has a long way to go, but he rebounded it and he was a presence out there."
STORMING BACK
The Hurricanes claimed an early 11-2 lead in the game's first seven minutes behind nine points from Anthony Walker, but the Orange surged back with a strong scoring stretch of their own. Syracuse outscored Miami 23-3 over a five-minute stretch that featured 13 points from Girard III and four assists from Richmond to give the 'Cuse a 25-14 lead with 5:29 to play in the half.
Syracuse finished the first half strong, outscoring the 'Canes 11-6 over the final five minutes of the opening frame, to take a 36-22 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Orange were buoyed on the boards in the first half by Edwards, who led Syracuse with five rebounds over the game's first 20 minutes, tying his career-high effort.
KEEPING THE 'CANES AT BAY
The Orange offense picked up where it left off at the start of the second stanza, using a 9-0 run over the course of two minutes to extend its lead to 23. Syracuse soared past the Hurricanes in the first seven minutes of the half, outscoring Miami 23-9 to take a 59-31 lead with 12 minutes to play.
Seven unanswered points from the 'Canes cut the Orange advantage to 21 with under 10 to play, but eight points from Buddy Boeheim and six points from Quincy Guerrier over a seven-minute stretch keep Syracuse ahead comfortably, 80-53, with 2:22 to play. A free throw from Edwards and a dunk from Richmond in the last two minutes of the contest put the finishing touches on an 83-57 victory.
