
#13 Buckeyes Sweep Orange in Season Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Syracuse took to the court for the first time in more than 10 months at the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 23. The host and 13th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes shutout the Orange in the opening round, 4-0. Syracuse will play either Tennessee or Virginia in the consolation match on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.

Ohio State won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The squads split the first two matches as Syracuse sophomore Polina Kozyreva and junior Sofya Trescheva defeated Kolie Allen and Kathleen Jones, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot, while Ohio State's Irina Cantos and Lucia Marzal posted a 6-3 win against graduate student Miranda Ramirez and sophomore Zeynep Erman at No. 3. The Buckeyes took the point after Luna Dormet and Lisa Hofbauer posted a 6-3 victory against graduate student Natalie Novotna and freshman Viktoriya Kanapatskaya in the No. 1 spot.

OSU posted wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles and clinched the match when Marzal defeated Trescheva at No. 4, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Novotna, who was making her Syracuse debut after transferring from Virginia Tech last spring, and Allen split the first two sets at No. 1 singles and were heading to the third set when the match was called.
