SYRACUSE, N.Y. – All-ACC and All-BIG EAST performer Maddie Kobelt '14 returns to her alma mater to serve as an assistant tennis coach. Kobelt played for the Orange from 2011-14 and served as a team captain as a senior.
Â
"I am thrilled that Maddie will be joining our coaching staff at Syracuse," head coach Younes Limam said. "Maddie's reputation in the coaching community is as good as it gets and for good reason. She has had great success as a player in the collegiate level and in the WTA, and also as a college coach. Her work ethic, experience, and passion for the sport will bring tremendous value to our program."
Â
Kobelt has served as an assistant coach for both the women's and men's teams at Kenyon College since 2018. Last spring, she helped guide the women's team climb to No. 12 in the ITA Division III National Team Rankings. The men's squad was 7-3 with victories against three nationally-ranked opponents before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. Overall, three of her players earned ITA All-America honors in 2019-20.
Â
The New Albany, Ohio native was the 14th-ranked singles player and teamed with Valeria Salazar to form the second-ranked doubles team in the Northeast in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings in her senior season. Kobelt was named to the All-ACC Second Team as well as the All-ACC Academic Women's Tennis Team. She became the 30th player in program history to earn 100 victories, ending her career with a 103-72 record.
Â
Kobelt earned All-BIG EAST honors as a junior when she posted an overall record of 14-8 in singles and a 14-7 mark in doubles. She led the team with an overall record of 35-15 in her freshman season.
Â
Following her collegiate career, Kobelt, who earned her bachelor's degree in health and exercise science, competed on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour and International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit. From 2014-2020 she earned career-high WTA world rankings of No. 893 in singles and No. 294 in doubles along with 12 ITF doubles titles.Â
Â
"I want to thank Coach Limam and the Athletic Department at Syracuse University for this opportunity to return to my alma mater as an assistant coach," Kobelt said. "It was an honor to be a student-athlete and it's an even greater honor to join the coaching staff. I am excited to start working with such an excellent group of players and coaches. Go Cuse!"
