Too Much Tigers; 'Cuse Handed Road Defeat
10/21/2021 7:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TIGERS STRIKE QUICKLY
Clemson scored twice in a 42-second span to get on the board first at Riggs Stadium. Maliah Morris opened the scoring after getting a feed from her sister, Makenna Morris. Hershfelt then guided in a crossing pass from Caroline Conti to increase the lead to 2-0, 23:22 into the contest.
Hershfelt's second net finder, set up by a pass from Layne St. George, made it 3-0 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Hanks then followed with consecutive goals -- both headers. Fran Stables earned assists on each. Her second tally came with 30 seconds to go before the intermission.
WALSH MAKES HER SYRACUSE DEBUT
Junior keeper Michaela Walsh made her first collegiate appearance when she entered the game at the start of the second half. She earned the first save of her tenure while logging the final 45 minutes.
CLEMSON EXTENDS ITS ADVANTAGE
The Tigers added to their total just 4:30 into the second half on a goal from Conti. Makenna Morris earned her second assist of the contest on the play.
At the 58:48 mark Grace Wagner took advantage of passes from Maliah Morris and Renee Lyles to convert. Harper White closed out the game's scoring on a tally assisted by Megan Borncamp.
MACHTENS MISSES FIRST GAME
Syracuse freshman Pauline Machtens, the club's top scorer this fall, was not with the team in South Carolina. She had earned an invitation to participate in the German U-20 National Team Camp this week and was in her native country.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Clemson improved its all-time series advantage with Syracuse to 7-0-1.
- Senior forward Meghan Root made her 47th straight start for the Orange. She owns a squad-leading 50 appearances in the starting lineup at Syracuse.
- The Tigers had 10 shots on goal to Syracuse's 2.
- Clemson had a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Syracuse stays in the South for a second straight road game, this time in Raleigh against NC State on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m.
