10/28/2021 12:15:00 PM | Field Hockey
It all comes down to Friday afternoon's road game for No. 9 Syracuse who travels to No. 5 Louisville with a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship and No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament on the line. A win for the Orange would give Syracuse the edge in a head-to-head tie breaker with the Cardinals resulting in the No. 1 seed and a bye in the first round of next week's tournament, hosted by Syracuse University at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange are 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC while Louisville, who has already clinched at least a share in the regular season title, is a perfect 5-0. Fans can watch Friday's 3 p.m. game at Trager Stadium live nationally on ACC Network.Â
Syracuse has a 5-2 record against nationally-ranked opponents this season and rattled off nine-straight wins from Sept. 12 until last Friday's 2-1 home loss to No. 16 Virginia. The Orange have six different players with four-plus goals this season and are led by Pleun Lammers with eight. Graduate student Quirine Comans has a team-high 22 points with seven goals, second on the team, and eight assists. Defensively, the Orange have held opponents to 1.0 goals per game on 6.1 shots per game while averaging 3.43 goals per game and 19.4 shots per game on the offensive front.Â
The Cardinals have won each of their last four games and are 9-1 in one-goal games this season with their only loss during that stretch being to No. 2 Michigan on the road, 2-1. Louisville's only two losses this season are to the nations top two teams, Iowa (0-2, Sept. 19) and Michigan (Oct. 10). Katie Schneider leads Louisville with nine goals and 21 points while Julie Kouijzer leads the team with seven assists. Louisville  (15-2) is coming off back-to-back overtime wins against No. 10 North Carolina, 3-2, and No. 25 James Madison, 1-0, entering Friday's game.Â
Following Friday's ACC finale at Louisville, the Orange return home to close out the regular season with a non-conference game against Cornell. The two teams met Sept. 22 in Ithaca, N.Y. where the Orange earned a 1-0 victory. Prior to the start of Sunday's 2 p.m. game against the Big Red, Syracuse will recognize its graduating seniors who will play their final regular season home game at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The non-conference game against Cornell will be streamed live on ACCNX through the ESPN app.Â
