Top-ranked Florida State (12-0, 5-0 ACC) broke open a close game in the second half and claimed a home victory against Syracuse (4-7-1, 0-5 ACC), 5-0, on Thursday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Syracuse is in the midst of a three games versus top-four opponents stretch -- the first of its kind in program history.
SEMINOLES STRIKE FIRST
Syracuse was able to hold off Florida State for most of the first half but, on the Seminoles sixth corner of the opening period, the hosts scored. Amelia Horton pounced on a loose ball in front of the net and earned her first tally of the campaign. The Horton score gave Florida State 17 different players with goals in 12 games this fall.
The two conference combatants went into the intermission with Florida State clinging to a 1-0 advantage.
FLORIDA FLASHES FIRE POWER IN SECOND HALF
The Seminoles' relentless attack wore down the Orange after the break. Florida State scored three goals in a span of 12 minutes to push its advantage to 4-0. Clara Robbins started the run by scoring at 52:14 off an assist from Jody Brown. FSU then caught a break when a corner kick went in off an SU defender. Kristen Pavlisko followed with a netfinder off a pass from Brown at 64:06.
Maria Alagoa finished the scoring with a tally at 85:07.
PROULX'S SAVES NOT ENOUGH FOR ORANGE
Senior Lysianne Proulx played aggressively throughout the Florida State onslaught and finished with four saves. She made a number of plays on balls served into the box during the match.
TIVNAN RETURNS
Syracuse's defense did receive a boost with the return of Jenna Tivnan, who has missed six games with injuries. The senior defender earned the start, which was her 43rd career appearance with the first string.
