5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. NC State
11/17/2021 9:31:00 PM | Football
Syracuse closes its road slate at NC State on Saturday. Here's five things to know about the matchup:
1. Tucker's on Record Watch
Star running back Sean Tucker, who ranks second nationally in rushing, is near a record that has stood for more than 40 years.
He is 10 yards behind Joe Morris' single-season rushing record of 1,372, which was set in 1979 – before the Carrier Dome was constructed.
2. Tough Sledding
Syracuse will close the year with back-to-back games against teams currently ranked in the AP Top-25 and College Football Playoff rankings.
The Orange are 0-1 vs. ranked foes this year, falling 40-37 in overtime to then No. 19 Wake Forest earlier this year. 'Cuse has a strong history when getting a second crack at a ranked team under head coach Dino Babers. This is the fifth time in his six seasons that the Orange have faced two-or-more ranked teams in a season. Syracuse is 3-1 in its second game vs. a ranked opponent in a single season under Babers, including wins over No. 17 Virginia Tech (2016), No. 2 Clemson (2017) and No. 22 NC State (2018). 'Cuse only played one ranked opponent in 2019 and lost to No. 25 Pitt 21-10 in their second of four games vs. ranked squads last year.
3. Â Tucker Not the Only Rushing Record Chaser
QB Garrett Shrader is closing in on rushing records for a Syracuse quarterback, while his backfield mate chases the national rushing lead.
Shrader has run for 713 yards on the year, despite not starting the first three games. He's 100 yards exactly behind Bill Hurley for the most yards by a quarterback in a season. Hurley's 813 rushing yards came in 1979 – the same year that Joe Morris' single-season rushing record was set.
4. Awards Piling Up
RB Sean Tucker was named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award on Wednesday. It's his second major honor that he's now a semifinalist for, joining the Maxwell Award.
He's 1-of-10 left for the Doak Walker – presented annually to the nation's most outstanding player, and 1-of-15 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the nation's most outstanding player.
5. One Dome Game Left
Fans have just one more opportunity to catch the 'Cuse football team in the Loud House this season.
