Syracuse (2-1) opens its slate at the Battle 4 Atlantis against VCU (2-2) in the first of three games at Imperial Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
SETTING THE STAGE
Syracuse suffered its first loss of the season to Colgate this past Saturday. The defeat ended a 54-game winning streak the Orange had constructed against the Raiders, the longest active streak in the Division I ranks. The Raiders converted 18 3-pointers in the triumph.
VCU will try to rebound from a loss to Chattanooga its last time out, as the Mocs defeated the Rams, 56-54. The game was a back-and-forth battle, but was decided by a short jumper from Chattanooga's Malachi Smith with 0.4 seconds remaining.
THE SYRACUSE-VCU SERIES
Syracuse has one all three previous meetings with VCU. The Orange and Rams first met in the 1984 NCAA Tournament, a game Syracuse won 78-63. Following this, the Orange have hosted the Rams in the Dome twice, capturing two home wins. Syracuse went 18-10 last season and advanced to its 20th Sweet Sixteen in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. VCU recorded a 19-7 season, but was unable to participate in the NCAA Tournament due to positive COVID-19 tests.
THE BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS
Syracuse is making its second appearance on Paradise Island in The Battle 4 Atlantis. The Orange claimed the 2015 title in its last visit.
The Syracuse-VCU pairing will move on to face the Arizona State-Baylor bracket on Thursday, depending on the outcome of the respective contests.
GIRARD OFF TO STELLAR START
Syracuse junior guard Girard heads into Wednesday's game averaging 19.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He has made 18-of-30 from the field (.600) and 13-of-16) of his 3-point attempts, this season. Girard has made 61 consecutive starts at Syracuse
Senior guard Buddy Boeheim leads the team in scoring average (20.0 ppg.). He is on the preseason watch lists for the NABC, Naismith, Wooden and Jerry West awards.
WILLIAMS JR. LOOKS TO BUILD ON CAREER YEAR
Senior forward Vince Williams Jr. averaged a career high 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds last year and has taken an even bigger leap in his last two contests for the Rams. Williams Jr. notched 14 points in a win at Vanderbilt last week before netting a career high 21 points against Chattanooga.
