Syracuse (3-2) closes out the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament against #19 Auburn (4-1) at Imperial Arena at 4:30 p.m on Friday.
SETTING THE STAGE
Syracuse battled Arizona State last night and came away with a 92-84 win. Junior center Jesse Edwards had a standout performance for the Orange, surpassing his career high points by 10 with 21 points. Edwards also contributed eight rebounds and two blocks. All five starters for the Orange recorded double digit points including Cole Swider, who notched 19 points and 11 rebounds during the contest.
Auburn suffered a double-overtime, 115-109 loss to Connecticut, in the first day of the tournament. The Tigers bounced back with a 62-53 victory against Loyola Chicago last night. Freshman forward Jabari Smith led the offense with 14 points.Â
THE SYRACUSE-AUBURN SERIES
This will be only the second contest between the Orange and the Tigers. Their only other meeting was in 2003 at the NCAA East Regional Final. Syracuse came away with a 79-78 triumph and eventually won the NCAA Championship.
ORANGE STARTERS ON FIRE
All five starters for the Orange scored in double digits during last night's outing against Arizona State. Jimmy Boeheim was the first to put the Orange on the board for the fifth consecutive game and totaled 11 points and eight rebounds. Edwards notched his career high of 21 points and Swider earned himself a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Buddy Boeheim led the offense for the second night in a row with a game-high 23 points last night and 20 points, 24 hours earlier. Joseph Girard III contributed 16 points and five assists to the victory.
SMITH LOOKS TO BUILD ON FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN
Tigers freshman forward Jabari Smith has had a strong beginning to his rookie campaign. He is averaging 15.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Smith's first double-double lifted the Tigers to a 93-65 victory against ULM and he contributed 14 points to the win against Loyola Chicago last night.
