Syracuse's all-time leading scorer changes mind and returns for 2022.
Andre Szmyt, the most accurate kicker in program history, has announced he intends to return for the 2022 season on Sunday – a change in his previous plans to forgo his sixth season of eligibility.
Szmyt was the 2018 Lou Groza Award winner was a unanimous All-American, the ninth unanimous All-American in Syracuse football history and first since 2001, after leading the NCAA in made field goals and scoring the third-most points by a kicker ever in 2018. He owns Syracuse's single-season scoring record (151) and field goals made record (30).
A former walk-on, Szmyt redshirted in 2017 and was the team's kicker for the 2018-21 seasons. However, due to the NCAA's blanket eligibility releif in 2020, he still has one year remaining. He walked in the Orange's Senior Day and Senior Walk during the home finale, with the intention of not using a sixth season. Already a graduate of SU in 2021 with a degree in psychology, he's currently enrolled in a master's program in instructional design, development, and evaluation for the 2021-22 academic year.
The addition is another big boost for the 2022 'Cuse roster. Led by All-American Sean Tucker, Syracuse can return their starter for the regular season finale at 17 of the 22 available spots on offense and defense. 'Cuse can now keep the entirety of its special teams units intact as well.
Fans can secure their tickets for next season by submitting a deposit to ensure they'll be part of the action for the team's seven game home slate.

It's too hard to walk away with a year of eligibility left and that feeling like there's unfinished business with this group. I'm looking to walk off like the year I walked on.
