THE GAME
- Syracuse hosts Army to open the 2021 campaign for the Orange.
- The game will be broadcast on ACC Network with Syracuse alums Anish Shroff '04 and Paul Carcaterra '97 on the call. Matt Park '97 and Kyle Fetterly '09 will broadcast the action on TK99/105, Cuse.com and the TuneIn App, while WAER will also carry the game.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
- For the first time in 351 days, Syracuse lacrosse is back on the field facing an opponent, and for the first time in 359 days, 'Cuse is playing a home game.
- Syracuse last took the field on March 7, 2020 at Johns Hopkins, before the remainder of the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
- The pandemic also modified how Syracuse and other lacrosse programs typically conduct preseason and fallball.
- The Orange were able to have fall practices, which began in October through mid-November, but were unable to play other schools as they typically would with fall scrimmages, so this is their first action vs. an opponent.
- This game ends what is the longest duration of time without an intercollegiate lacrosse competition on Syracuse's campus since World War II canceled the 1943-45 seasons.
THE ARMY SERIES
- Army holds a 40-27 advantage in the all time series between the two programs, but the Orange have emerged victorious in eight of the past 10 matchups.
- In last season's meeting between the two teams, the Orange erased a four goal deficit and scored eight of the game's final-10 goals to win 9-7 in a defensive battle.
- All-American goalkeeper Drake Porter posted a career-high 18 saves, while Black Knights' netminder Wyatt Schupler stopped 16 shots on the other end. Jamie Trimboli led the way offensively with five goals, while Brendan Curry (2-2) also had a multi-point day. Tucker Dordevic and David Lipka notched the other two goals.
- In their 68th meeting, Army is 'Cuse's third-most common opponent behind just Hobart (106) and Cornell (105).
A WIN AGAINST ARMY WOULD...
- Be the program's 918th victory, second all-time behind Johns Hopkins.
- Improve SU's record to 72-28 in its last 100 games.
- Move Syracuse to 28-40 all-time vs. Army
- Improve Syracuse's record to 416-160-10 against teams from the state of New York.
- Make the Orange 116-79-2 all-time vs. teams from the Patriot League.
AGAINST THE PATRIOT LEAGUE
- Syracuse is 115-79-2 all-time against the nine current members of the Patriot League.
- This is Syracuse's only scheduled matchup against a Patriot League foe this season.
- 'Cuse boasts a 49-12-1 mark against Colgate, 27-40 record against Army, 9-19-1 record vs. Navy, 8-0 record vs. Bucknell, 3-2 record against Lehigh and a 19-6 record against Loyola.
RISING IN THE RANKS
- Stephen Rehfuss moved into 18th in career assists at Syracuse with his seven-assist performance vs. Johns Hopkins, in what was the last game of 2020.
- Seven more helpers will move him into the top-10 all time at Syracuse.
- At the pace he was at last season (3.6 assists per game), he'd have tied Kevin Rice (44 in 2014) for 10th-most assists in a single season by the end of the regular season.
JOINING THE CENTURY CLUB
- Jamie Trimboli is one point shy of becoming just the third midfielder since 2010 to record 100-career points.
- Trimboli, already a three-time All-American, would join JoJo Marasco (155) and Sergio Salcido (109) as the only other two to accomplish the feat in a over a decade.
- Trimboli is 15 goals from breaking into the top-seven all-time at Syracuse in career goals by a midfielder.
POINT STREAKS
- Junior midfielder Brendan Curry extended his consecutive games with a point streak to 21 games vs. Johns Hopkins in last year's season finale, a mark that ranks 32nd nationally.
- His streak is fifth in the ACC. Charlie Bertrand (Virginia) has the nation's longest streak at 59 games. He transferred in from Merrimack this season.
AN UPGRADED HOME VENUE
u Home to the Orange since the 1981 season, the Dome got a face lift this offseason, with Saturday's game set to be the lacrosse team's debut in the new building.
u The bulk of $118 million in renovations to the facility which hosts SU football, basketball and lacrosse, were done this offseason. They include: a new fixed roof, upgraded lighting and sound and a gigantic center-hung video screen, among other amenities.
u The venue has been Syracuse's home for all 11 NCAA titles and 'Cuse has finished first or second nationally in attendance every season since the NCAA has begun tracking it.
u In total, 1,472,971 fans have watched 288 lacrosse games in the Dome, or an average of 5,114 fans per contest. SU is 248-40 in the Dome all time.
STATE CHAMPS
- Syracuse has four games scheduled against in-state foes this season.
- Historically, Syracuse has dominated New York. Owning a combined 415-160-10 record against teams from New York, including a 4-0 mark in 2020.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
- Since joining the ACC, the Orange is 49-13 versus non-conference opponents, including a 45-9 mark in regular-season, non-league contests.
DESKO GETS THE HALL CALL
- Head coach John Desko was selected as part of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame 2020 class. The official ceremony will be at a later date after the traditional fall event was not held this year.
- Desko becomes the 29th member of the Orange program to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, including 12 players that he coached.
- All-four coaches in Syracuse's lacrosse history are also in the Hall of Fame as Desko will join his predecessors Roy Simmons Jr., Roy Simmons Sr., and Laurie Cox.
- With both Desko and women's coach Gary Gait in the hall of fame, Syracuse is the only DI program that can claim its head coach of both lacrosse programs is a hall of fame member.
- Syracuse, Denver and Lehigh are also the only NCAA DI programs with a hall of famer active at the helm, as Kevin Cassese was enshrined from his time as a player in 2018 and Bill Tierney was honored as a coach in 2002.
MIDFIELD RACKING UP POINTS
- The 'Cuse first-line midfield of Jamie Trimboli, Tucker Dordevic and Brendan Curry registered 51 points (10.2 points per game) last season. That pace would have put them in rarified air as far as some of the Orange's best midfield trios go.
- Since 1980, only the 1990 midfield unit of Gary Gait, Paul Gait and Rodney Dumpson (11.9 points per game) and the 1988 midfield of Gary Gait, Paul Gait and Peter Allen (11.1 points per game) had more points per game than the current group.
- The 2020 unit sat ahead of the 1989 first midfield (Gait, Gait, Dumpson/10.1 points per game) and the 1994 midfield of Roy Colsey, Dom Fin and Charlie Lockwood (9.9 points per game) to round out the top-five scoring midfields in SU history, although Fin, Colsey and Lockwood didn't always run as a unit.
- Gary Gait, Paul Gait, Colsey, Fin and Lockwood are all in the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
ORANGE IN OPENERS
- Syracuse owns an all-time record of 81-20 in season-opening games, including 20-2 under head coach John Desko.
- The Orange beat Colgate 21-14 in last years season opener.
- Since the Dome opened in 1980, Syracuse is 26-2 in season openers that take place at home.
