Falcons Edge Orange

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Syracuse senior Simon Triantafillou scored on a penalty kick in the 58th minute but it wasn't enough as Bowling Green defeated the Orange, 2-1, in Buffalo, N.Y.
Â
"We played a good Bowling Green team today, which will win soccer matches this spring." Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "It was a competitive college soccer match and, at times, we moved the ball well. After we scored through Simon we really put BG under pressure and I thought that we were going to grab the equalizer. The effort and work rate of the group was very good. We just need a little more quality in the final third and I know that we have the attacking players to create more opportunities. We conceded on a corner kick and a poor defensive mistake in our own penalty area. Our new group is on a very steep learning curve and our defensive mistakes are being punished right now. This is painful but there is no hiding as a team and we will get better. I look forward to getting the group back together this week in practice."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Bowling Green (2-0-0) took an early lead off a set piece. Chris Sullivan served the ball to the far post off a corner kick where he connected with Nathan Masters, who put his shot in the back of the net in the 16th minute.
Â
Sullivan assisted on the Falcons' second goal in the 54th minute. The Orange (1-4-3) mishandled the ball in front of their goal and Sullivan took possession. He pushed the ball to Kyle Cusimano, who recorded the goal.
Â
Syracuse cut the deficit in half less than four minutes later on a penalty kick that was awarded after freshman Deandre Kerr was taken down in the box. Triantafillou converted on the PK attempt for his first goal of the year. The Orange continued to send numbers forward and created chances, but couldn't take advantage of the opportunities.

UP NEXT
Syracuse takes on Vermont in Albany, N.Y. on Monday, March 1.
