Syracuse senior goaltender Allison Small recorded a career-high 49 saves in a 3-1 win at Robert Morris on Friday evening. Her save total is the third-best single game performance in the nation in 2020-21 and the fourth-best in Syracuse history. The Orange offense featured goals by sophomore forward Anna Leschysyn, junior forward Abby Moloughney, and freshmen defender Hannah Johnson. The Orange (9-8-1 overall, 7-6-1 College Hockey America) play their final regular season game in the second game of the series at RMU at 2 pm on Saturday. The game will be streamed live via Stretch TV.
"Tonight the game boiled down to some timely scoring and great goaltending," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "RMU came at us with a lot of pressure in the last 10 minutes but we hung in there with some huge blocked shots and cleared the zones just enough for Alison to catch her breath and weather the storm."
The Orange scored three consecutive goals after RMU tallied the first of the game. Leschyshyn tallied Syracuse's first score on a set up by freshmen forward Tatum White and senior defender Jessica DiGirolamo to tie the game at one with less than five minutes remaining in the first period. Leschyshyn has eight goals on the season, including six in the past three games.
In the second period, Moloughney put a rebound shot into the back of the net to give the Orange the lead, 2-1, with 5:38 to play in the frame. Senior forward Victoria Klimek and junior forward Lauren Bellefontaine assisted on the score.
With just more than four minutes left in the game, freshman defenseman Hannah Johnson put the Orange ahead by two, 3-1. She fired a shot into the top right corner of the goal. Leschyshyn and White recorded the assists.
