
Kanapatskaya Tops 11th-Ranked Player; #15 UVa Tops Orange 4-3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse freshman Viktoriya Kanapatskaya defeated the 11th-ranked singles player in the nation to extend her winning streak in Syracuse's 4-3 loss to No. 15 Virginia at the Drumlins Tennis Center. The Orange won the doubles point, but the Cavaliers won the first four singles matches to finish to earn the victory.

"Virginia's ranking and record speaks for itself," said Syracuse head coach Younes Limam. "I was proud of the way we battled. It was a great collegiate tennis match."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Kanapatskaya was down early in both sets but rallied to defeat 11th-ranked Natasha Subhash, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. The win was the fifth straight for the freshman, who has yet to lose a singles match this season. Unfortunately for the Orange, the match was decided before Kanapatskaya's match concluded.

The Orange took the doubles point with wins in match one and two. The No. 1 duo of Polina Kozyreva plus Sofya Treshcheva defeated redshirt senior Rosie Johanson and freshman Emma Navarro, 7-5.The No. 2 pair of graduate student Natalie Novotna plus freshman Viktoriya Kanapatskaya defeated junior Sofia Munera and sophomore Natasha Subash, 7-6 (7-3).

On the singles side, the Cavaliers claimed the first four singles matches to finish. To secure its first point, Virginia's Vivian Glozman beat Kozyreva 6-4, 6-2. The first set in the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches went to tie breakers, with UVa coming out on top in both. Emma Navarro defeated Guzal Yusupova 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, while Rosie Johanson took down Novotna 7-6, 6-1. To seal the Virginia victory, Sofia Munera defeated Miranda Ramirez 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot.

The No. 6 singles match was played out and Ines Fonte secured her first collegiate singles victory, defeating Amber O'Dell 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).
