5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. Stony Brook
3/10/2021 2:44:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Syracuse hosts Stony Brook for its fourth-straight home date to start the year, here's five things to know about the matchup:
1. Another First Time Opponent
Syracuse and Stony Brook have never played each other
Syracuse has been known to maintain consistency in its scheduling, owning two of the three longest-running rivalries in lacrosse and typically playing mostly the same schedule year-to-year. COVID has changed a number of traditional scheduling across the country, leading to back-to-back first time additions for the Orange after hosting Vermont last week. Prior to last week, Syracuse had not faced a new opponent since 2013, when Canisius visited the Dome.
2. Empire State of Mind
New York State has 17 NCAA Division I lacrosse teams, the most of any state nationally. With Friday's matchup, 'Cuse will have now faced off with 13 of the other 16.
The Orange have yet to face St. Bonaventure (which is in its third year as a program), Manhattan and Wagner. Syracuse also has not faced LIU since LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn merged into one athletic department in 2019-20, but had previously played Post.
Syracuse is 416-161-10 against teams from the Empire State.
3. Can't Get Past Porter
Drake Porter enters Friday's game leading the nation in saves per game (16.0).
His strong start to the season has particularly shown in the last two outings. Against Virginia, he stopped 15 shots and allowed just 10 goals to the Cavaliers high-powered offense, tying their fewest goals in their last-20 games (the 2019 ACC final against Notre Dame was the last time they were held to 10). Last week against Vermont, Porter made the most saves (21) by a Syracuse goalie since Peter Coluccini made 22 saves against Cornell in 2007.
4. Back on National Television
Every single game on the Orange's 2021 slate will be broadcast nationally, including 11 of the 12 regular season games on linear stations (either ACCN or ESPNU). The Orange will be on ACCN on Friday and after last weekend's ACCNX game, will now be on linear TV the rest of the way.
96-percent of Syracuse's games since the start of the 2016 season have been broadcast nationally.
5. Students Invited Back for Hofstra
After a successful first game in conjunction with New York State's pilot program, students will be welcomed back for Syracuse's game against Hofstra next week.
While there will be no fans on Friday afternoon, these continued steps are promising for Syracuse to be able to welcome even more student fans, player families and the general public back to future games.
