Syracuse's (14-8) dramatic run in the 2021 ACC Tournament came to an end in a 72-59 semifinal loss to top-seeded Louisville (23-2) on Saturday. Emily Engstler tallied a squad-best 21 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat.
Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi scored in double digits for the second-straight game, notching 11 points and six rebounds. The redshirt junior played all 40 minutes of the contest. Freshman Kamilla Cardoso also scored in double figures, tallying 10 points and seven rebounds.
PLAYING CATCH UP
The Orange played from behind for most of the game for the second consecutive outing. Syracuse led, 4-3, after Djaldi-Tabdi scored in the paint but when the Cards answered on a layup from Mykasa Robinson, the Orange would not find themselves in front again. Cardoso produced a conventional three-point play at the end of the first period, but the Orange trailed, 19-13.
Louisville used a 10-4 run to start the second quarter and extended its lead to 28-17. Kianna Smiith had six of the Cardinal points in the stretch. The Orange answered with two free throws from Engstler, a layup by Digna Strautmane, and two more points in the paint from Amaya Finklea-Guity. Louisville regrouped, and managed to construct a 37-30 lead by the time halftime rolled around.
ENGSTLER BRINGS ORANGE BACK
Engstler keyed a Syracuse comeback with a 12-point, third quarter. Back-to-back baskets by Engstler had the Orange within five, 48-43, with 4:36 remaining in the period. Six unanswered points from Louisville followed, and the Cardinals held on the rest of the way.
DEFENSE A DIFFERENCE-MAKER FOR CARDS
Louisville forced 15 Syracuse turnovers in the contest and had a 19-6 edge in points off turnovers in the encounter. The Cardinals also limited Syracuse to 3-of-17 (.176) of its 3-point attempts.
WOUNDED WARRIORS

Mangakahia, a finalist for the 2020-21 Nancy Lieberman Award, was on the sideline with a lower body injury that was suffered in the team's final regular-season game last Sunday against NC State. Williams was out due to an upper body injury that caused her early exit in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal matchup against Florida State.
OF NOTE
Syracuse will now wait for the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Monday, March 15.
