
Mangakahia Signs Training Camp Contract with Phoenix

Former Syracuse women's basketball star Tiana Mangakahia has signed a training camp contract with the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.Â
The 5-foot-6 guard led the nation in assists per game (7.2) and averaged 11.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 20 appearances this season. She scored in double figures 13 times and had six games with 10+ assists this season. Mangakahia shot 42.5 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from 3-point range and 84.2 percent from the free throw line. She was named WBCA All-America Honorable Mention, All-ACC Honorable Mention and was a top-5 finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award.Â
Mangakahia, the all-time leader in career assists at Syracuse, finished her career with 736 helpers in 85 games (8.7 apg). She scored 1,341 points and was the fastest player in program history to score 1,000 points (60 games).
Mangakahia missed the 2019-20 season while battling Stage 2, Grade 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (breast cancer). After eight rounds of chemotherapy and a bilateral mastectomy, Mangakahia was declared 'cancer free' on Nov. 6, 2019.Â
She returned to the court after 615 days between games on Nov. 29, 2020 and led the Orange to victory over Stony Brook with a 16-point, seven-rebound and three-assist performance.Â
