Orange Varsity Four Wins Battle of Top 20 Crews
4/18/2021 3:41:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The Orange first varsity four beat three top-20 crews to win their race on Sunday at the Big Ten Invitational. The winning crew, featuring coxswain Louise Rath, Heather Stafford, Grace Asch, India Aikens and Luisa Gathmann, capped a strong weekend performance against many of the nation's top teams. On Saturday they finished second in the morning race, beating #3 Ohio State and #12 Indiana and finishing behind #4 Virginia, and took second in the afternoon race ahead of #9 Tennessee and #16 Iowa and behind #6 Michigan in the afternoon race. All five boats for the 20th-ranked Orange performed well against 12 of the nation's top 20 teams.
"Today's bright spot was the varsity four getting the win," said head coach Luke McGee. "This weekend our crews did a great job using every single race to get better each time down the course. In every race the crews faced a spot where it could go either way and they dug in to win. Across the board I saw athletes committing themselves to win."
Syracuse's first and second varsity eights finished third in their races with the varsity eight just 1.6 seconds behind #12 Indiana for second place and the second varsity eight within 1.5 seconds of 12th-ranked Indiana. Eleventh-ranked Rutgers won both races and #18 Washington State came in fourth.
In the second varsity four race, the Orange battled #4 Virginia for second place finishing just 2.4 seconds behind the Cavaliers. Sixth-ranked Michigan won the race and #3 Ohio State came in fourth. The Orange third varsity four beat #3 Ohio State and finished second behind #6 Michigan.
The invitational field featured 12 of the nation's top 20 teams, including 20th-ranked Syracuse. In addition to the Orange, the field includes third-ranked Ohio State, sixth-ranked Michigan, 11th-ranked Rutgers, 12th-ranked Indiana, 15th-ranked Wisconsin, 16th-ranked Iowa, 17th-ranked Minnesota, and Michigan State from the Big Ten, in addition to 4th-ranked Virginia, 7th-ranked Alabama, 9th-ranked Tennessee, 18th-ranked Washington State, Louisville and Notre Dame.
