Softball Sweeps UVA

The Syracuse softball team earned a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) wins on Friday night in Charlottesville, Va. Alexa Romero went the distance in a 4-1 win in game one in which she recorded her 100th strikeout of the season. In game two, Syracuse was guided by Lindsey Hendrix in the circle who threw six innings before Kaia Oliver came in to close out the 7-4 win. Senior Gabby Teran went a combined 4-for-4 with four RBIs in the doubleheader.
Syracuse (17-15, 10-12 ACC) scored all four runs in the top of the third inning for an early 4-0 lead. Neli Casares-Maher singled down the third base line to drive in the first run of the game. A double by Teran, her second of the game, brought Paris Woods and Casares-Maher and Lailoni Mayfield traded places with Teran at second to make it a 4-0 game. Virginia answered in the bottom of the fourth when Molly Keshin had an RBI gound out. The Cavaliers threatened but Romero escaped the bases-loaded jam and hold on to a three-run lead without any further damage. Syracuse held on for a 4-1 win as Romero recorded the 100th strikeout of the season in the sixth inning.
Teran was 3-for-3 with two extra base hits in the win. Casares-Maher was 2-for-3 with one run batted in. Romero improved to 6-5 overall this season.
The Orange scored two runs in the top of the first inning in the night game with a double by Casares-Maher. Makena Fidler hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to score Casares-Maher for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning UVA scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
Two innings later Syracuse extended to its lead by an RBI double by Casares-Maher. Virginia added two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added a run in the sixth to make it 5-4, Syracuse. Teran extended the lead with a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh for a 7-4 Syracuse advantage.
Hendrix allowed four runs on six hits in six innings to earn her third win of the season. Oliver got her third save of the season with a strikeout in one inning in the circle.
Angel Jasso was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored while Casares-Maher was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a walk.
Saturday's game, originally scheduled for 3 p.m., has been moved up to a Noon start due to expected inclement weather in Charlottesville. Sunday's 12 p.m. game is as scheduled. Both games can be streamed on ACCNX through the ESPN app.
