Varsity Four Wins at Rutgers
4/5/2021 11:16:00 AM | Women's Rowing
Syracuse's varsity four beat Rutgers in the first competition of the 2021 season for the Orange women's rowing program. The Orange finished the race in 7:16.3, more than five seconds ahead of Rutgers (7:21.5) on Mercer Lake (NJ). The Syracuse varsity four included stroke Eliza Yager, third-seat Katherine Ryan, two-seat Margaret Sweeney, bow Junior Ognovich and coxswain Emma Dziedzic.
"The varsity four raced a great race and was a bright spot for us," said head coach Luke McGee. "The boat has a good combination of youth and experience. After more than 500 days out of competition due to COVID-19 it was great to see some Syracuse boats go down the race course. All of our boats raced with great intensity. Clearly we have work to do to improve our speed. This week we will try to make improvements to the execution. After having been off for so long, any opportunity to race will be incredibly valuable for us to learn more about ourselves."
The varsity eight, which included coxswain Hannah Murphy, Meg Varcoe, Josie Kiesel, Lea Dahn, Lucy Pearce, Eleanor Alexopoulos, Alena Criss, Emma Braun and Kamile Kralikaite, finished the race in 6:41.4, six seconds behind Rutgers. The second varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:48.5, 10 seconds behind Rutgers. The boat included coxswain Louise Rath, Christie Castorino, Luisa Gathmann, Madison D'Ambra, Madeleine Holzman-Klima, India Aikens, Emma Gossman, Grace Asch and Heather Stafford. The third varsity eight, which included coxswain Skyler Rivera, Sarah Haney, Elizabeth Vogt, Helena O'Donnell, Carolin Roose, Lily Moffly, Rebecca Farrell, Julia Comerford and Madeleine Gordon, posted a time of 7:05.9, to finish second behind Rutgers A and ahead of Rutgers B. The second varsity four completed the race in 7:46.1. The boat included coxswain Julia Miranda Roach, Olivia Schaertl, Haley Uliasz, Maddi Segarnick and Elizabeth Vogt
