'Cuse Wins Orange Challenge Cup
4/10/2021 7:04:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Syracuse will keep the Orange Challenge Cup in the Ten Eyck Boathouse for the fourth consecutive season with a win against Northeastern in the varsity eight race in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The oldest cup race in women's collegiate rowing, the Orange Challenge Cup started in 1979 and is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Syracuse, Northeastern and Pennsylvania. Penn is not competing this season due to COVID-19. The three programs have competed annually for the Orange Challenge Cup from 1979 through 2019, with the exception of 1994. Syracuse's win is the eighth in a row against Northeastern, including winning the Orange Challenge Cup in 2017, 2018 and 2019 when the three teams competed for the cup within the Doc Hosea Invite.
"Today with our second opportunity to go down the racecourse this season you saw much more composed crews across the board, people a little more trusting of what they can do, and really racing with some great intensity," said head coach Luke McGee. "This is definitely a step in the right direction. We know that this coming weekend the Big Ten Invitational is going to be a big test against some of the best crews in the country. We will enjoy this one today and then back to work on Monday as we get ready for this weekend."
The 18th-ranked Orange swept all four races against the Huskies. The third varsity eight kicked off the day finishing the 2K race in 7:14.65. Northeastern completed the course in 7:44.29. The 'Cuse Varsity eight finished the race in 6:43.01, while Northeastern recorded a time of 7:05.9. In the third race, the second varsity eight won with a time of 6:50.96 to Northeastern's 7:08.35. The Orange first varsity four closed the day with a win, covering the course in 7:44.5 and Northeastern finished in 8:09.81.
Syracuse will compete in the Big Ten Invitational on April 17 and 18 at East Fork State Park in Bethel, Ohio. The Orange are slated to compete against Big Ten programs including Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers and Wisconsin, in addition to Alabama, Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington State.
