
Six Earn Inside Lacrosse All-America Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior Sarah Cooper highlights a group of six members of the Syracuse women's lacrosse squad named to Inside Lacrosse's Media All-America teams. Cooper earned first-team honors for the first time in her career.

Junior Meaghan Tyrrell earned a spot on the second team, while graduate student Ella Simkins and junior Megan Carney were voted to the third team. In addition, senior Sam Swart and graduate student Kerry Defliese were honorable mention selections.

Cooper, who was a second-team All-American in her first two seasons, ranks second in the ACC in both caused turnovers per game (1.72) and ground balls per game (2.44). She has caused three or more turnovers five times this season, including a career-high four against Notre Dame. In addition, Cooper has picked up four or more ground balls five times in 2021.

Tyrrell leads the team in points (96), goals (59) and assists (37). She has recorded 10 points in a game twice this season, including a seven-goal, three-assist performance against Loyola in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tyrrell ranks ninth on Syracuse's all-time record list for points in a season and tied for seventh on the single-season assists list.

Simkins is tied with Cooper for the team lead in caused turnovers with 31. She also had 36 ground balls and 70 draw controls, all of which are career highs. Simkins also has two assists.

Carney ranks second on the team in points (69) and goals (49) despite missing the last five games after suffering a season-ending knee injury on April 22. Carney posted five or more points 10 times in 18 games in 2021.

Swart has started all 18 games this season in the midfield. She's posted a career-high 41 points on 34 goals and seven assists and tied her career high with 16 ground balls. Swart posted her sixth hat trick of the season against Loyola to help Syracuse advance to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

Defliese has helped the Orange defense hold their opponents to 10 or less goals 10 times in 2021. She ranks second on the squad in ground balls with a career-high 39 to go along with 25 caused turnovers.

Syracuse, which is the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, takes on No. 6 seed Florida in the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Fans can watch the game on ESPN3 or listen to the broadcast on WJPZ 89.1FM in the Syracuse area.
