Orange Set to Kick Off NCAA Championships Wednesday Night
6/8/2021 10:36:00 PM | Track and Field
Four Syracuse runners will take to the track this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Annie Heffernan (10,000-meters), JP Trojan (10,000-meters), Aidan Tooker (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Amanda Vestri (10,000-meters) are all set to compete for the Orange this week.
WEDNESDAY PREVIEW:
Men's 3000-meter steeplechase – 8:32 p.m. ET - ESPNU
Aidan Tooker returns to Eugene for his third time competing at the NCAA Outdoor Champiopnships in this event, but first since 2018. Tooker was sidelined due to injury in 2019 and the 2020 season was halted due to COVID.
He is a two-time All-American in the event, finishing fourth in 2018.
Tooker will race in the first-of-two semifinal heats, with the top-five from each heat plus the next-two fastest times advancing to Friday's final. Each semifinal has 12 competitors. Based on season-best results, Tooker is the 12th seed in his heat, however his PR stacks up well amongst the group, owning the fourth-fastest personal best in the heat.
Virginia Tech senior Fitsum Seyoum has the top seed in the heat, with a season-best time of 8:31.23.
Men's 10,000-meter run – 10:38 p.m. ET – ESPN2
JP Trojan will run in the 10k for the Orange men. Trojan qualified with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA East Prelims, automatically punching his ticket to Eugene.
The 10k is a one-race final on Wednesday night. He enters the 24-man final with the 22nd-best seed time (28:55.00). BYU junior Conner Mantz is the overall favorite with a season-best time of 27:41.6.
