SYRACUSE N.Y. – Senior forward Manel Busquets had a hand in each of Syracuse's first three goals as the Orange jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game and held a 3-1 halftime lead. He tallied one goal and two assists in the first 45 miutes. 'Cuse (5-4-1 overall, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) added two goals in the second half to secure the 5-2 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium.
"This was a character performance for us," said head coach Ian McIntyre. "The scrip was set and I am very pleased with the way we played."
Busquets scored the first goal less than three minutes into the game when freshman midfielder Giona Leibold sent a cross to graduate student Max Kent who headed the ball toward the goal. The Catamounts goalie deflected the ball and Busquets put the loose ball into the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
Less than five minutes later, Busquets fed the ball to senior forward Colin Biros in the box who settled the pass, spun around the defender and fired a shot past the Vermont goalie. Vermont cut the Orange lead in half when graduate student forward Nacho Lerech scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute of the half.
Less than two minutes later, freshman forward Francesco Pagano scored Syracuse's third goal on assists from Busquets and Leibold.
In the second half, Vermont's Matt Black scored on the Catamounts' second penalty kick of the game to make the score 3-2 with 35 minutes remaining in the game.
The Orange scored the final two goals to seal the 5-2 win. In the 59th minute, Biros fed the ball from midfield to Kent who headed the ball over the UVM goalie's head to give the Orange a 4-2 lead. Freshman forward Curt Calov closed the scoring when he curled the ball into the top right corner of the net on a free kick to make the score 5-2 Syracuse in the 83rd minute.
