Orange Upset Bid Thwarted In OT

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Syracuse (7-8 1-3 ACC) pushed host Wake Forest (13-3, 3-2 ACC) to the limit but the Demon Deacons remained unbeaten at home after pulling out a 77-74 triumph.
Syracuse graduate forward Jimmy Boeheim had 21 points, senior guard Buddy Boeheim added 17 and senior forward Cole Swider contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Graduate guard Alondes Williams led the Wake Forest offense, recording a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds.Â

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Following a back-and-fourth 39-plus minutes of play, and with the Orange clinging to a 69-67 lead, Wake Forest forced a turnover. The Demon Deacons' Walton Dallas then sent the game into the extra session with a dunk in the final seconds.

Wake Forest took control with 3:46 to go in overtime after back-to-back baskets from Khadim Sy and Dallas Walton put the hosts up by four.

BACK AND FORTH
Jesse Edwards and Cole Swider put Syracuse on the board first with a jumper and a 3-point shot, respectively, in the first minute of play. The Orange maintained the lead despite the Demon Deacons knotting the score four times. After Wake Forest tied the score at 16-16 with 13:18 to go in the half, Syracuse responded with a basket from Jimmy Boeheim and a trio of free throws from Joe Girard III to extend the lead to 21-16. Symir Torrence sunk a 2-point shot to give the Orange their largest lead of the half at 30-23. The Demon Deacons managed to battle back and take charge scoring 10 straight points. Jake Laravia led the surge, sinking the 3-point shot that gave them the edge for the first time in the game. Wake Forest had the 38-36 advantage at the end of the first half.

The margin was narrow throughout the second half, with no more than seven points between the two teams. Swider nailed a shot to start the second half, grabbing the early edge for the Orange. The lead was exchanged twice more during a Syracuse 13-3 run led by Jimmy Boeheim with seven points. The Demon Deacons answered back with 12 straight unanswered points to take back the 53-49 lead with 10:44 remaining.

Wake Forest possessed the lead for the next 6:26 of play until the Boeheim brothers put the Orange back on top twice more. AÂ turnover from Jimmy allowed Wake Forest to sink the final basket of regulation.

Swider again opened the scoring during overtime giving the Orange the lead that was quickly taken away by the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest extended the score to 75-72, and Syracuse was unable to battle back on top, despite the opportunities for Buddy Boeheim and Frank Anselem at the line.

The Orange return to the Dome for three straight home games beginning with Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The contest is set to start at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
