5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. Clemson
10/19/2022 9:22:00 PM | Football
The two remaining unbeaten teams in the ACC, and two of the nine remaining unbeatens in college football, will square off on Saturday at Noon in Death Valley. Here are five things to know about the marquee matchup.
1. Rare Battle in Death Valley
While Clemson has experienced plenty of success in its own right, including multiple College Football Playoff titles, Syracuse's trip to Clemson will be a first in one way. In the 81-year history of Memorial Stadium, this is going to be the first time that two unbeaten teams have met in Death Valley with each team already having at least six wins.
It's also the first time that Syracuse has played in a game where both the Orange and its opponent were 6-0 or better since 1959, when the then 6-0 'Cuse team beat a 7-0 Penn State team before going on to win the National Championship.
2. The Mob Brings the Heat
Syracuse's defense enters Saturday's game having not surrendered a touchdown since Sept. 23 and lead the ACC and rank sixth nationally in scoring defense. The Mob has allowed just 13.2 points per game this season.
The trend has been continued success for the Orange, who ranked 112th nationally in total defense in 2020, improving to 19th in 2021 and is now up to eighth in the category this year.
3. Top-15 Battle
This is Syracuse's second-straight game against a top-15 team after the Orange dispatched the then No. 15 NC State squad last week. 'Cuse is seeking its first road win vs. a team ranked in the AP Top-25 since the 2010 season.
4. Red Zone Domination
Syracuse and Clemson are two of the nation's top teams inside the red zone, combining to be 61-of-63 when inside the red zone this season.
The Tigers lead the nation at a perfect 35-for-35, while 'Cuse is 26-of-28. One of the Orange's two trips it did not score was at the end of the Wagner game, when the squad kneeled three times.
5. Oronde Emerging
Tight end Oronde Gadsden is the lone player in the ACC with three 100-yard games this year and he ranks second in the conference with 84.5 yards per game. Only Boston College's Zay Flowers (92.7) has more.
