Despite a defensive effort that forced two interceptions and seven punts, Syracuse fell 19-9 on the road at Pittsburgh.
Making his first career start, Carlos Del Rio-Wilson completed eight passes on 23 attempts for 120 yards. For a third-straight game, Ja'Had Carter came away with an interception, while Isaiah Johnson also picked off the Panthers in the loss. Syracuse's defense had 10 quarterback hurries, including three from Marlowe Wax, who led the Orange with 13 total tackles.
The Orange return to the JMA Wireless Dome next weekend for the final home game of the 2022 season. Syracuse will take on Florida State with an 8 p.m. kickoff on ACC Network.
Syracuse scored first with a 23-yard field goal from Andre Szmyt, the only score of the opening quarter for either side. Syracuse punted on its first possession before Carter reeled in a third interception in as many games on the Panthers' first drive.
Pitt took a 7-3 lead with 10:26 to play in the second quarter on a six-yard rush from Rodney Hammond Jr. Two drives later, Szmyt pulled the Orange back within one with a 48-yard field goal. The Panthers answered three minutes later with a field goal of their own to take a 10-6 lead at the break.
Syracuse's defense continued to affect the Panthers as Isaiah Johnson picked off Pitt on a trick play attempt just outside the red zone. Both Orange interceptions came when the Panthers were well within field goal range.
There was only one score in the third quarter, a one-yard rush from Pitt's C'Bo Flemister to put the Panthers up 17-6. The Orange cut into the lead with 4:53 to go in the game on a 49-yard field goal from Szmyt. It was the second-longest drive of the day for the Orange, covering 54 yards in eight plays.
After the Orange defense forced Pitt into its fourth punt of the fourth quarter, the Panthers pinned Syracuse down at its own 1-yard line. Pitt's defense got to Del Rio-Wilson deep in the Orange endzone and forced a safety. Syracuse did not recover the on-sides kick attempt and fell 19-9.
The Orange will look to snap its three-game losing skid against Florida State next week.
