Junior Tatum White scored a goal with four seconds left in regulation to lift Syracuse to a 4-3 College Hockey America victory against Lindenwood. After stealing the puck in the neutral zone, White carried the puck toward the Lindenwood goal and fired a shot into the bottom left corner for the game-winner. Sophomore Sarah Marchand scored a pair of goals for the Orange and junior netted her second goal in as many games. Syracuse (5-7-1 overall, 4-0 CHA) recorded their second CHA sweep of the season.
Â
"It was great to be able to respond and find a way to win tonight, Â but now its finding ways to put teams away when we are up by two," said head coach Britni Smith. "Tatum jumped out on a change very late in the game probably just hoping to get to overtime and found the good turnover and got a puck on net for the goal. Sarah is a player who can make a difference every shift. She is a player we look to in games when we need a goal it's on her stick."
Â
Junior Hannah Johnson started Saturday's game the same way she began the series opener, scoring a goal in the first five minutes of the game to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. The Readfield, Maine native waited for the puck to come loose from a group of players on the Lindenwood (0-8, 0-4) crease, corralled the puck when it popped out of the group and put it in the right side the goal.
Â
Sophomore Sarah Marchand put the Orange up two with a goal less than five minutes later. She fed center Lauren Bellefontaine in front of the crease from the left side and then crossed in front of the goal, went after the rebound off of the Lindenwood goalie, dove for the puck and put it in just inside the right post. The assist is Bellefontaine's sixth of the season. Lindenwood's Morgan Neitzke scored with 3:20 remaining in the second period to make the score 2-1.
Â
In the second period, Marchand struck again to give the Orange a 3-1 advantage. The forward stole the puck in the neutral zone took the puck down the ice on a breakaway and buried a shot in the top right corner for the score. The Lions cut the Orange lead to one again, 3-2, on a goal by Olivia Grabianowski with 59 seconds left in the period.
Â
In the third period, White's goal countered the Lions score that tied the game with 4:25 left in the period.
Â
Orange goaltender Arielle DeSmet recorded 25 saves.
Â
After the game, the 2021-22 Syracuse CHA Championship team celebrated their regular season and tournament titles with a ring ceremony.
Â
"Part of our culture is unity and that includes everyone who was here before us, so we wanted to make sure we were playing our game and a game that made the alumni proud. It was great to have that win for them. The exciting finish – I'm sure they liked it a little more than I did (laughing)."
