Orange Outshine Golden Grizzlies

Jesse Edwards was a perfect nine-of-nine from the field and finished with 18 points and seven rebounds in a 95-66 Syracuse victory against Oakland inside the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night. The Orange improved to 5-4, 1-0 (ACC), and the Golden Grizzlies moved to 2-9, 0-2 (Horizon).
Joseph Girard III matched Edwards' 18-point output, while Symir Torrence and Maliq Brown had personal-best outings with 12 points apiece. Brown added seven rebounds, all in 15 minutes of work off the bench.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Over the final five minutes of the first frame, the Orange produced a dominating, 18-0 run, the put the game out of reach. Girard had eight of those points and four other Syracuse players tallied during the stretch.
COACH BOEHEIM SAID
"We started moving the ball better in the first part of the second half," said head coach Jim Boeheim. "We need everybody to play well. It's not just one or two, it's all our guys."
EARLY TUG OF WAR
There were eight lead changes in the first half. A 3-pointer by Oakland's Keaton Harvey had the Grizzlies within three, 27-24, with 6:23 before the intermission. Trey Townsend had 14 points at that stage for the visitors.
Edwards ignited Syracuse's significant run with a shot in the lane, Chris Bell added a jumper in the lane and the Orange were off to the races. By halftime, the Orange were ahead, 45-24.
THE CUSHION
SU cemented its hold on the contest even further in the second half. Eight unanswered points, including six from Brown, pushed the Orange in front, 68-33 with 13:14 remaining. Torrence had assists on three of the four baskets.
DEEP DEFENSE
The Orange held the visitors to just 20.0% (5-for-25) from beyond the arc, marking Syracuse's best defensive effort in that category this season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 10, as the squad welcomes former Big East Conference rival Georgetown. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the historic pairing will air live on ABC.
