Two teams with four-game winning streaks square off when Syracuse (13-11 overall, 7-6 ACC) takes on Virginia Tech (14-7 overall, 6-7 ACC) on Saturday, Feb.12. Tip time in Cassell Coliseum is at 6:00 p.m. The contest will be televised on ESPN2.
SETTING THE STAGE
The Orange continued their hot streak by defeating Boston College, 73-64, on Tuesday night. The triumph marked Syracuse's seventh-straight win against the Eagles.
Saturday will be the first time this season that Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim will use a different starting lineup. Junior center Jesse Edwards will not be in Saturday's first five after suffering a broken left wrist in the Orange's last outing.Â
Virginia Tech also looks to add another win to its current successful run. The Hokies won their most recent game against Pittsburgh on Monday, 74-47.
THE SYRACUSE-VIRGINIA TECH SERIESÂ
Saturday will be the 16th meeting between the Orange and the Hokies dating back to 1976. Syracuse leads the series 11-5, winning the last two consecutive games. Syracuse has a 4-3 edge in games at the Cassell Coliseum.
A COLE SWIDER STREAK
Along with the Orange's win streak, Cole Swider has been on a streak of his own. Swider has scored in double figures in each of the last four games and averaged 17.3 points-per-game in that span. He converted a combined 14-of-19 3-point attempts (.737) in those outings. Swider equaled his season-high of 21 points against Boston College.Â
Joseph Girard III has been a major contributor in the month of February so far. In the three games, he has averaged 17.3 and 6.0 assists per game. He leads the ACC and ranks eighth nationally in free throw percentage (.918),Â
HOKIES FEATURE LONG-RANGE ASSAULT
Virginia Tech enters the Syracuse pairing ranked second in Division I in 3-point field-goal percentage (.421). The Hokies are averaging 9.4 3-pointers a game.
Keve Aluma is the club's scoring leader (15.3 ppg.). Justyn Mutts is third in scoring average (10.3) and first in rebounding (7.3 rpg.).
