SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- Syracuse (15-12, 9-7 ACC) made a defensive stand for the final 22 seconds of overtime and held off one last Georgia Tech (11-16, 4-12) assault to hold on, 74-73. The Yellow Jackets three shots at a game winner but were unable to convert.
Jimmy Boeheim (20 points-10 rebounds) and Cole Swider (18 points-12 boards) posted double-doubles and the Orange won for the fifth time in six outings.
Two Yellow Jackets also produced double-doubles on the night. Rodney Howard contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out and Jordan Usher scored 14 points and tallied 13 rebounds.
FROM COACH BOEHEIM
"I'm really proud of the way the guys made the last couple of stops," said head coach Jim Boeheim. "It takes a lot of guts and determination to do what they did".
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With the Orange trailing in overtime, 70-69 with just over two minutes remaining, Buddy Boeheim converted his only 3-pointer of the night to put the Orange ahead, 72-70. Following a defensive stop, Syracuse increased its lead to 74-70 on two free throws by Jimmy Boeheim.Â
Â
Georgia Tech's Kyle Sturdivant closed the gap by hitting a 3-pointer with 1:36 left, but the Yellow Jackets were held scoreless the rest of the way.
GEORGIA TECH FIRST OUT OF THE GATE
Visting Georgia Tech raced to an 8-1 lead, thanks in part to six points from Rodney Howard. The Yellow Jacket margin reached nine, 12-3, before Syracuse managed to retaliate. A 12-5 Orange run, keyed by five points from Jimmy Boeheim, created the first of five first-half ties. Jimmy Boeheim went on to score 15 first-half points. A late 3-pointer from Cole Swider sent the teams into the intermission knotted again, 33-33.
A TALE OF TIES
The Orange scored the first points of the second half on another Swider 3-pointer and two minutes in, Syracuse had a 38-33 advantage. It wasn't long before Georgia Tech was right back in the thick of things. Michael Devoe's 3-pointer had the Jackets ahead, 43-42, and a see-saw battled ensued.
A Swider basket had the Orange in front, 59-53, with 5:23 left in regulation, but that was quickly wiped out by back-to-back 3-pointers from Dallan Coleman that evened things with 4:22 on the clock.
The Orange had two chances in the final minute, but attempts in the lane by Jimmy Boeheim with 48 seconds left and again as time expired, did not fall.
THE ORANGE DEFENSE COMES UP BIG
Georgia Tech opened the extra session with a 3-point shot from Devoe -- only to be answered by one from Swider. Following two Rodney Howard free throws, Syracuse answered again, this time on a driving layup by Bourama Sidibe. Sidibe later added a free throw that gave the 'Cuse a 69-68 edge that was quickly extinguished by Jordan Usher's two free throws. Georgia Tech was ahead, 70-69, with 2:54 on the clock, setting up the dramatic finish.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
The Orange travel to South Bend, Indiana to take on Notre Dame on Wednesday, Feb. 23. Tip time in Purcell Pavilion is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN News.
