Orange Split ACC Weekend

'Cuse took the doubles point against Georgia Tech but ultimately fell, 5-2, due to losses in singles competition. Shiori Ito and Sofya Treshcheva defeated the nation's No. 16 doubles pair in a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles portion of the afternoon. Ines Fonte and Viktoriya Kanpatskaya also won both of their doubles matches this weekend to improve to 7-2 as a duo this season. Kanapatskaya fought to win a closely contested singles match against Georgia Tech's Ava Hrastar later on, but the 'Cuse could not find much more success against one of the ACC's top squads.Â
The Orange bounced back with a 4-0 victory on Sunday, Mar. 6 over Clemson. Miyuka Kimoto and Polina Kozyreva clinched the doubles competition in a tiebreaker, the Orange's two doubles wins marked the ninth time in 11 spring matches that Syracuse won the pairs point. Ines Fonte kept the momentum going as she cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Clemson's Ali DeSpain. The remaining five singles matches all reached the third set, though a lighting delay at the Drumlins Tennis Club prevented three from reaching their conclusions. Following the delay, Kanapatskaya closed out her match against Cristina Mayorova with a come from behind victory. Kimoto finished off the 4-0 afternoon by wrapping up a hard-fought match to clinch the fourth and final point.Â
Kanapatskaya's 4-0 weekend across all competitions improves her spring season record to 16-5. Shiori Ito and Polina Kozyreva are right there with Kanapatskaya with 16 wins of their own, as Kozyreva's nine-match winning streak was snapped this weekend. Kanapatskaya is 5-3 out of the No. 1 spot, and Kimoto is 5-3 out of the No. 2 position. Ito and Treshcheva have now played all four conference doubles matches from the No. 1 spot and are 2-1 in completed matches.Â
The Orange have the next 11 days off after playing four conference matches over two weekends. Syracuse is Carolina-bound in two weekends for its third road trip of the spring. The ACC competition does not get any easier as No. 1 North Carolina awaits on Friday, Mar. 18 followed by No. 9 Duke on Sunday Mar. 20.Â
