The Orange jumped out to as much as a six goal lead, but a strong second half from #4 Cornell turned the game into a back-and-forth battle in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the Big Red scored with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie it and scored in the sudden death OT period to claim a 16-15 win in the Dome on Monday night.
Brendan Curry, battling through injuries of his own on a an already depleted 'Cuse squad, led Syracuse with five points (4-1), and Tucker Dordevic also notched another hat trick for a squad that saw nine different players score. Cornell's John Piatelli was the star for the Big Red, scoring six goals and three assists on the evening.
After Cornell stormed all the way back with a five goal run to take their first lead with 11 minutes remaining, Curry scored less than a minute later to even things back at 13. He scored again 30 seconds later to overtake the lead once again, but a costly penalty gave the Big Red a man up that resulted in the game being tied at 14 with 8:22 remaining.
Dordevic scored his 39th of the season with 1:45 remaining, but Piatelli found Michael Long on the backside doorstep with time waning in the shot clock on the ensuing possession, which would send the game to an extra session.
After winning the overtime faceoff, Hugh Kelleher scored on a step-down shot that the Orange were a split second late to find and won the game for Cornell.
The game was all Orange at the start. 'Cuse scored the first four goals, with Mikey Berkman, Jackson Birtwistle, Saam Olexo and Owen Seebold all finding the back of the net. Piatelli scored his first of the day to break the string with 4:21 left in the first. Birtwistle and Aviles scored two in a row, marking the first collegiate multi-goal effort for the redshirt-freshman, and Buttermore tacked on one more, ending the first frame with a 7-2 lead.
The teams split the second as well, with Curry, Dordevic (2) and Matteo Corsi scoring in the period, sending SU to the locker room with a five goal lead.Â
Cornell scored seven of the next eight though, which ultimately left 'Cuse down one before the remaining scoring.
