PITTSBURGH, PA.- Despite holding #2 Virginia Tech to its third lowest score total of the season, Syracuse lost 2-1 to the Hokies in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament to conclude its 2022 season.Â
The Orange finish their season at 26-21 overall, 8-15 ACC marking the program's best record since 2018 when they finished 30-20 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange offense struck first in the top of the first inning. A solo home run to deep center field from Neli Casares-Maher put Syracuse ahead 1-0. Freshmen Kelly Breen and Tessa Galipeau had back-to-back singles to left field to threaten even more in the inning.Â
A double from Emma Ritter was the only hit of the first inning for the Hokies.
The Orange produced two base runners in the top of the second, following consecutive walks for Rebecca Clyde and Paris Woods. They were unable to move the runners further than second base. The Hokies went down in order in the bottom of the second.
Despite a first and third situation for the Orange in the third, they could not add to the score, leaving two runners on base.Â
Jayme Bailey was responsible for the Hokies offensive spark in the third with her single to center field. A walk advanced Bailey to second and a single from Morgan Overaitis knocked her in to tie the score at 1-1.
Ariana Adams came in for Orange starting pitcher Lindsey Hendrix to close out the third inning of play.Â
A solo shot from Virginia Tech's Bre Peck put the Hokies ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning. Syracuse added two more hits to the board in the next three innings but could not add any runs. The final score was 2-1, sending Virginia Tech to the semi-finals of the tournament.Â
