The 2V8 and 3V8 will race in the Petite Finals Sunday morning
Syracuse's varsity eight crew made a statement in Saturday morning's semifinals at the IRA National Championship earning a second place finish behind No. 2 Yale to earn a spot in Sunday's Grand Final. The 2V8 and 3V8 will race in their respective Petite Finals while the varsity four concluded its season with a fourth place finish in the C Final at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.Â
Varsity Eight (Varsity Challenge Cup)
Coming down the race course even with No. 3 Brown and No. 4 Dartmouth, the 8th-ranked Orange varsity eight made its move in the middle 1,000 meters to earn a spot in the Grand Final finishing in 5:36.882, 1.872 seconds behind No. 2 Yale and 0.408 ahead of third-place Brown.Â
It marks the second-straight year the Orange have qualified for the Grand Final but this year's IRA National Championship features Ivy League crews that did not compete last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Syracuse was fourth overall in 2021 narrowly missing the podium in a close race with Dartmouth.
Sunday's Grand Final marks the first time the Orange will race for a chance at the national championship in a full field since 2012, when 'Cuse placed fifth -- it's best finish in the Dave Reischman era.Â
The Orange line up with No. 1 Cal, No. 2 Yale, No. 3 Brown, No. 5 Washington and No. 7 Harvard at 10:50 a.m. ET. Syracuse will be in Lane 6Â between California (Lane 5)Â and Harvard (Lane 7).
Second Varsity Eight (Kennedy Challenge Cup)
The 2V8 placed fourth in a loaded semifinal that featured crews from Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth, Boston University and Cornell. The Orange crossed the finish in 5:51.427 to advance to the Petite Finals at 9:50 a.m. Sunday.Â
The Orange have Lane 4 for the Petite Final and will be beside Harvard (Lane 3) and BU (Lane 5). Cornell, Drexel and Wisconsin also qualified for the Petite Final.Â
Third Varsity Eight
The 3V8 will also race in Sunday's Petite Final after a fifth place finish in the A/B semifinals on Saturday. 'Cuse crossed the finish of the 2000 meter course in 6:01.345 and edged central New York foe Cornel by 1.866 seconds.Â
The Orange (Lane 6) will race Cornell, the U.S. Naval Academy, Boston U, Princeton and Penn in the Petite Finals at 9:20 a.m.Â
Varsity FourÂ
The varsity four concluded its season with a fourth-place finish in the C Final on Saturday morning. Coxed by sophomore Mark Ezaki, the Orange crossed the finish in 6:44.417 ahead of Oklahoma and Wisconsin.Â
Three oarsmen from the V4+ return to Syracuse next season, freshmen Malakai Leon, Thomas Schrieber, Michael Kepler, but will bid farewell to senior Kyle Slusarczyk who graduated last month with a degree in computer engineering.Â
All races will be streamed live on the IRA Youtube Channel and fans can follow along with live results here. Fans can also download the IRA National Championship Timing App available in the Apple App Store.Â
