It was guaranteed gold for Syracuse University as two members of the Orange men's lacrosse program went head-to-head in Limerick, Ireland for the 2022 Men's Under 21 World Lacrosse Championship.
Originally scheduled for 2020, the U21 World Championships were delayed for two years. The games were originally meant for Under 20, but pushed back the age limit to accommodate the postponement for the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Team USA out-lasted Canada Lacrosse for a 12-10 win, the ninth-straight U21/U20/U19 championship for the American side, which never trailed in the title game.
Incoming graduate student and Lehigh transfer Cole Kirst was a member of Team USA. Kirst is the first-ever graduate student to suit up for Team USA's U21/U20 team. Kirst was among one of the top feeders in the tournament, handing out 11 helpers to tie for fifth in the Championship event while leading Team USA's assist efforts. Kirst finished with 15 total points, scoring four goals.
Returning member of the Orange, Owen Hiltz, helped lead Canada Lacrosse to another championship appearance. The rising junior netted a pair of goals in the championship game. The Peterborough product was among the top goal scorers in Limerick, depositing 19 goals to tie for ninth at the event. Hiltz led Canada Lacrosse with his 19 goals and was second among Canadian point scorers with 26 thanks to seven assists.
Another incoming member of the program, Finn Thomson, was with Canada Lacrosse as an alternate, ready to step in if necessary for the team.
Syracuse lacrosse was well represented on the global stage this summer with three major competitions. In addition to the three U21 Medalists, 11 women's lacrosse connections won 12 medals this summer, including Syracuse head men's lacrosse coach Gary Gait, who helped guide Canada Lacrosse to a silver-medal finish in the Women's World Championship in mid-July.
