SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse men's soccer opens its two-match road trip with a contest against defending America East champion Vermont on Sept. 2. The game is scheduled to kick-off at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
'CUSE UPDATE:
The Orange opened the season with two strong victories, coming in at No. 15 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll.
Syracuse beat Iona, 2-0, on opening night. Nathan Opoku opened the scoring early in the first half and Julius Rauch sealed the win with a second goal in the 69th minute. The Orange recorded 19 shots and seven shots on target. The Orange backline of Abdi Salim, Christian Curti, and Buster Sjoberg limited the Gaels to just four shots in the 90 minutes.
Opening weekend ended on a high note, as the Orange beat former top-25 team Penn State. Senior midfielder Colin Biros scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute of action. Syracuse's defense was sensational as it held a potent Nittany Lion attack to just 10 shots and four shots on target. Lucas Daunhauer recorded four saves, two of them coming in the final five minutes of play to secure the victory.
Curti was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, Aug. 20, as he was vital in the two shutout victories.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS:
Head coach Rob Dow is in the sixth season at the helm of Vermont's men's soccer program. He has a career record of 51-29-6.
Vermont started the season off with a road win over non-conference foe Merrimack. Junior midfielder Ryan Combe scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute. Vermont was aggressive on the attacking end, recording 19 shots and winning 14 corners.
The Catamounts followed up the win with a 2-0 loss to Quinnipiac in their home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 30, despite outshooting the visitors 20-5. Quinnipiac senior forward Brage Aasen scored two goals in the first half.
The 2021 season was a highpoint for the Vermont men's soccer program under Dow. The Catamounts finished with a 13-5-2 record and won the America East, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Vermont lost, 1-0, in the first round to Villanova.
SERIES HISTORY:
Friday night's match represents the sixth meeting between Syracuse and Vermont. The Orange lead the all-time series, 3-1-1.
The two squads last met in 2021 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse bested Vermont, 5-2, in a high scoring affair. Five different Orange scored on the night, as Curt Calov capped off the scoring display with a direct free-kick goal.
UP NEXT:
Syracuse wraps up the road on Monday, Sept. 5 against former BIG EAST rival UConn. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. The Orange then return to the SU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 10 as they open Atlantic Coast Conference play against defending conference champion Notre Dame. The contest will begin at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
