5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. Purdue
9/14/2022 8:00:00 AM | Football
Syracuse and Purdue square off on Saturday in what is the first of four-straight home games for the 'Cuse. Here's five things to know about the matchup:
1. First Time?
Syracuse and Purdue have met once previously, when the Orange went to West Lafayette in 2004. The Boilermakers trip to the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday will be the first time they've played at 'Cuse.
Up until this week, Purdue was the last remaining current Big Ten member who Syracuse had never hosted.
2. QB Battle
Garrett Shrader has been one of the nation's top performing quaterbacks through two weeks this season. He is the highest graded Power 5 QB in back-to-back weeks according to Pro Football Focus and is on the Davey O'Brien Award Midseason Watch List now for his start.
The signal caller on the opposite sideline this week has plenty of accolades in his own right. An All-Big Ten honoree last season, Aidan O'Connell has completed over 60-percent of his passes and connected for five touchdowns in the Boilermakers' first two games of the year. He's on the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp National Player of the Year Award watch lists.
3. The Loud House
Syracuse starts an important four-game homestand on Saturday looking to continue its early momentum. There are plenty of ticket options and deals for fans to catch 'Cuse on Saturday or for any remaining home games.
Season, individual game, partial plans and group tickets are all available at Cuse.com/Tickets.
4. Efficiency
'Cuse scored on seven-straight possessions to open the game against UConn last week. The hot start continued an efficient trend for the Orange, which have come away with points every trip to the red zone this season.
On the contrary, the SU defense has yet to allow a score from inside the red zone, making the Orange the nation's only team with perfect red zone numbers on both offense and defense.
5. A Chance at a Historic Start
A win Saturday would give the Orange their second 3-0 start under coach Babers, but it would be just the programs ninth 3-0 start since 1942. Historically, 'Cuse has finished with a winning record in all-but-one of those prior occasions.
