Former men's soccer head coach Tim Hankinson passed away at the age of 67 after a courageous fight with cancer.
A native of Manhattan, Hankinson provided a profound impact on the collegiate and professional coaching circuit.
Hankinson was named Syracuse men's soccer head coach prior to the 1985 season. He guided the Orange to immediate success, as Syracuse won its second BIG EAST Tournament title and finished with a 12-6-4 record in 1985.
In 1986, Hankinson guided the Orange to new levels of success, leading the team to a 16-5-2 record. The 16 wins are the second most in a season in program history. Hankinson won the 1986 BIG EAST Coach of the Year award.
In five seasons at Syracuse, Hankinson complied a record of 69-40-18. His .614 winning percentage ranks second in school history.
Several Syracuse soccer legends flourished under the mentorship of Hankinson. Steve Morris set the school's single-season points record in 1989 with 50. Morris is also a member of the 40-40 club, as he scored 43 goals and tallied 43 assists under the direction of Hankinson. Goalkeeper Chris Whitcomb also set the school's save record with 408.
Before arriving at Syracuse, Hankinson graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1979. He got his start in collegiate coaching at Oglethorpe University. Hankinson also had stops at Alabama A&M and DePaul before returning to New York. He led Alabama A&M to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1980 and 1981.
Following his time at Syracuse, Hankinson took to the professional ranks, coaching several successful sides in the United States along with teams across the Atlantic.
