
No. 10 Orange Heartbroken in Strokes

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was heartbreak at J.S. Coyne Stadium Friday night as the No. 10 Syracuse University field hockey team was nipped 2-1 in penalty strokes against Wake Forest.
Following the game, Syracuse honored its four senior class members: Charlotte de Vries, Sienna Pegram, Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, and Pieke van de Pas.
Syracuse (10-6, 2-4 ACC) got an equalizing goal early in the second half from Willemijn Boogert, with honored fifth-year student-athlete Charlotte de Vries getting the assist. Abby Neitch made five saves in her home ACC debut.
Wake Forest (7-8, 1-5 ACC) had a regulation marker from Anna Gwiazdzinski with Ashley Hart assisting. Faye Janse converted the difference-making stroke off goal in the sixth round of the shootout. Ellie Todd made eight saves for the Demon Deacons, including seven in the 20 minutes of overtime.

How it Happened
- Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead 110 seconds into the second quarter as Giwazdzinski collected the ball in the heart of the 'Cuse defense, grabbing the ball from Hart.
- Syracuse pounded two shots in the second quarter but could not find the equalizer until the 33rd minute as Boogert inserted a corner the de Vries zipped right back to her on the baseline for Boogert to drive home.
- The Orange had several chances to end things in overtime but for Ellie Todd making five saves in the first 10 minutes of extra time.
- With the clock winding down on the first overtime, Neitch made a blocker save on a ranged shot from Hart to push things into a second overtime, the fourth double overtime of the year for the Orange, three of which have been in ACC competition.
- Syracuse had early penalty corners in the second overtime, but one was blocked with Todd making another two saves in the first 100 seconds of double overtime. Midway through the second overtime, Syracuse had another shot blocked, extending the period.
- In the sixth round of strokes, Janse found the back of the net. Syracuse missed its chance in the sixth round.
Behind the Numbers
- Syracuse out-shot Wake Forest 15-10, putting nine attempts on cage. Neitch stopped five of the six Demon Deacon shots on goal in her second-ever game played at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- The Orange earned seven penalty strokes, five of which came in extra time. Wake had three corner attempts, two of which came in the third quarter.
- The de Vries assist marked the 120th point of her illustrious Syracuse career, pulling her even for third all-time in career points for the Orange.
