It's a single game this weekend for No. 12 Syracuse University field hockey as the Orange head for Central New Jersey to face a familiar foe: Princeton University. The two opponents met twice last season, splitting the results. Sunday's game will begin at noon on ESPN+. The Orange are on an ACC bye week this weekend before returning to league play for the next three Fridays.
From the Start
- The fourth game of a four-game road swing is on tap for the Orange this weekend as Syracuse heads to Central New Jersey to face its third Ivy League foe of the season, Princeton.
- This marks the first time since 2021 Syracuse will play four straight true road games. Syracuse is 2-1 during this four-game swing, picking off top-20 opponents in No. 16 Penn State (2-1) and No. 12 Boston College (2-1, 2OT).
- Sunday's tilt marks the second time Syracuse faces the Tigers in New Jersey. The teams met twice a year ago, once in Princeton, a 5-1 Orange loss, before Syracuse ended the Tigers' season with a 5-2 revenge win in College Park, Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
- The Orange are in an ACC bye week this weekend, playing just one game: Sunday's showdown on ESPN+.
- Syracuse split results last weekend, knocking off No. 12 Boston College 2-1 thanks to a game-winning double overtime penalty stroke conversion from eventual ACC Player of the Week Eefke van den Nieuwenhof. The Orange lost an offensive battle on Sunday at No. 14 Harvard by a 6-5 count.
In the National Rankings
- The Orange remain in the top 15 of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, securing the number 12 spot with 424 points.
Six of the seven ACC teams were ranked again this week: No. 1 North Carolina, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Louisville, No. 8 Virginia, No. 11 Boston College, and No. 12 Syracuse.Â
- An additional three 2023 opponents were inside the top 20 this week: No. 13 Harvard, No. 16 Penn State, and No. 20 Cornell.
- Syracuse has been inside the top 15 of all five polls to date this season.
- This week's opponent, Princeton, was ranked 10th in the preseason poll, but has not been ranked since.
Van den Nieuwenhof: ACC OPOTW
- For the first time this season, a Syracuse player was selected as an ACC Player of the Week
- Eefke van den Nieuwenhof was tapped as the Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 3, her second career weekly honor from the ACC; she was selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week in her first season (2020).
- Van den Nieuwenhof, a senior co-captain this season, backed the Orange to a split weekend on the road at two top-15 opponents. She scored three goals across two games, including the game-winning penalty stroke in double overtime at No. 12 Boston College on Friday.Â
- Two days later, van den Nieuwenhof scored twice at No. 14 Harvard, both game-tying goals. The Soest, Netherlander scored her first in the 14th minute with a hammer during a penalty corner. In the 53rd minute, van den Nieuwenhof again tied the game, converting her fourth penalty stroke of the season and second in as many games.
Farquhar vs. Princeton
- Sunday's showdown will be the first time a Lynn Farquhar team faces the Princeton Tigers. As a head coach at Saint Joseph's, the Hawks never played the Tigers.
- As a student-athlete at Old Dominion, Farquhar helped the Monarchs to a 5-3 record against Princeton, meeting several times in both the regular and post seasons.
- All-told, teams with Farquhar on the roster or coaching staff are 7-7.
